COLOURSHOT – THE STORY
Hi and welcome to Colourshot, which uses lovely, colourful African fabric in everyday contemporary ways. Everything is handmade in the UK by myself, Tanya.
The Start
Colourshot started as a way to indulge my love of making clothes and buying fabric. By running a business, I could enjoy guilt free fabric shopping, and let loose on my creative side. Along the way, I added a jewellery business where I used purchased beads to design jewellery.
The Breakthrough
But the real breakthrough came when I decided to design and make handmade greeting cards using African fabric. (Which is why my Instagram is called Colourshotcards.😊) Having started out with cards, I then added African costume jewellery, this time completely handmade, using African cotton fabric (also known as ankara or kitenge), metal and wood.
The Development
I then used the card designs to embellish a range of everyday items, like mugs, coasters, bags notebooks etc. Over the past 6 years, Colourshot in its current form has steadily developed into a lovely card and gift shop, providing contemporary and useful gifts for all those who love a touch of African fabric in their daily life.
The Highlight
A highlight of the Colourshot range of cards and why they are so popular is that they offer a variety of skin shades, hair styles and hair colours to represent black people and their loved ones in all their glorious diversity. My aim is to continuously improve this range so that Colourshot is the first choice for quality handmade representative cards and gifts.
The clothes and generic jewellery business have had to be retired, to allow me to maintain my focus on cards and gifts
I love what I do, and hope you love it too.❤️
